I Get Around

Throwback

I don't know what it is about NYC. I don't know if it's the lights of Time Square or ALL THOSE bridges/tolls- but I get mesmerized by it. I always have a New York Story. I lost my wallet the night before I had to fly home once. Another time- I had to spend an entire afternoon in the public library because I lost my cell phone. Well- this was the best of those stories.

I hate the NY subway- It's so confusing. Plus- where my dad lives- I have to catch a bus for 45 minutes just to get to the train. So- every time I go to NY- I budget in a rental car. This particular time- I had a boyfriend that worked a Cipriani’s downtown Manhattan. One afternoon during my visit- I drove him to work. When I was taking him to work- we passed the Manhattan Mall. I made a mental note to go back once I dropped him off.

WELLLLLLLLLLL. I parked at Lexington & 32nd street...went to the manhattan mall- came back- I could not find the car. I walked around for 5 hours- up- down and around Lexington- 33rd- 30th- I could not find the car. My boyfriend got off of work at 11. He was mad- but he helped me- for another 6 hours to find the car. As we walked in the cold New York City October- he tried to jog my memory. I knew I had parked at Lex & 32nd (did I mention his ONLY house keys were in the car)? I kept calling the NYC tow depot every hour- to make sure it hadn’t been towed. I didn't think it was stolen- because I had rented a minivan...who would steal a minivan? It was freeeezzzzing cold. We thought maybe we would get a hotel...(WRONG)...All the hotels were $150-300 per night in that area. At about 3:00 a.m.- I called the police. They did not come until about 5:00 a.m.- after I had called 3 times. We got in the police car & they drove up 2 blocks- and found the car....at Madison & 31st....ONE BLOCK away from Lex & 32nd.....You may ask yourself how did I miss that...EASY...I knew I parked walked forward- looked at the signs & they said Lexington & 32nd street...Apparently- I parked & walked back because the car was at Madison & 31st.....

The police said it happens ALL the time. It’s just that I was sober and most people they pick up who can’t find their car are drunk. I like to look at things on the bright side- at least I didn't loose my wallet.
